'Everyone can relate to Grizabella.'

As shunned “Glamour Cat” Grizabella in the national tour of Cats, Melissa Grohowski has to put up with being the outcast of the felines. However, she gets to console herself by singing the musical’s signature song, “Memory.” Grohowski spoke to Broadway.com about her spotlight moment in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, which plays Regina's Conexus Arts Centre from March 27 through March 29.

“My favorite part of the show to perform is definitely ‘Memory,’" Grohowski said. “That moment in the show is so powerful. The message of the show is strongly about hope.” Grohowski also loves her character: “Everyone can relate to Grizabella. Everyone has had very hard moments in their life and has needed someone to lean on. I feel very connected to her sense of hope. Even though life has been hard for her, she finds a way to keep going and find her happiness.”

Grohowski also loves the closeness between the felines in Cats: “There is a strong bond between each cat in the tribe, exactly like a family has. They are there for each other through thick and thin and always will be.”

Based on T.S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, the musical tells the story of the Jellicle cats and each cat's individual quest to be selected as the lucky one that will ascend to "the heavyside layer." In their desire to be chosen to rise above to cat heaven, each cat sings his or her story. The hit show ran for 21 years in London and 18 years on Broadway, where it won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
